The level crossing and pedestrian footbridge at
Melton Ross. The level crossing is the dividing line of the
two villages. Melton Ross to the north of the crossings and
New Barnetby to the south. This photograph was taken from the
Melton Ross side of the crossing. The crossing is unusual in the
fact that the gates are always closed to road traffic. Vehicles
requiring to cross from one side to the other have to stop and ring
a bell provided in a box by the side of the gates. This alerts
the crossing keeper who will then manually open the gates for
vehicle access when it is safe to do so.
