| Effigy of Sir William Hatcliffe, situated in the vestry floor of Saint Mary's church Hatcliffe |
![]() |
As can be seen by the graphic on the left, the
effigy of Sir William Hatcliffe is in danger of being erased by
the ravages of time. Hopefully a fund set up in 1999 will
eventually raise enough money to restore it. The effigy, although modest by Tudor standards, would still have cost around forty shillings at the time of Sir William's death. Sir William is depicted in full armour, his hands joined in prayer. Above his head are his arms- which are quartered with those of his wife, Anne Skipwith. Although his features are erased they would probably not have portrayed his likeness but may simply have been representative. Most images were designed to show the piety of the subject and here we see Sir William's hands clasped in prayer. The graphic on the left and the text description above are reproduced by kind permission of Liz and Sid Hatcliffe, Bendigo, Australia.
