The ballast hole at Melton Ross
The ballast hole at Melton Ross.  This photograph was taken from the footbridge over the railway lines.  As a child growing up in Melton Ross I was always told that the ballast hole came about as a result of an aircraft crashing here during the war, and consequently making the large hole that holds the water.  I do not think for a minute that this is correct, but I cannot tell you how this large hole or pit did actually come to be here.  There are few months of the year that this hole does not hold a considerable amount of water and it has become a haven for wildlife.
